PRIVATE STRINGS ATTACHED TO PUBLIC FUNDS: Right now a congressional committee is reviewing HR1560, a bill that would give communities more money to upgrade and improve their wastewater systems.

Unfortunately, the bill currently contains language that makes eligibility for funding conditional on the community's consideration to privatize their wastewater system. This condition puts pressure on communities to hand over control of our most essential public service to private corporations who seek to profit from water.

There is absolutely no reason why privatization should be a prerequisite for receiving vital public funds to improve water infrastructure. Private water companies do not increase the efficiency of water systems; in fact, they often raise rates and compromise water quality and service at the expense of local residents. The committee needs to remove the privatization language from HR1560 before sending it to the House floor.

TAKE ACTION! Please take 2 minutes right now to click on the link below to ask your Representative on the Committee to support an amendment that strikes the "public-private partnership" language from HR 1560.

Please forward this action alert to others who you believe are interested in fighting to keep water a human right instead of a commodity.
